Psychiatric Services

What is Psychiatry?

Psychiatry is a medical field concerned with the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of mental health conditions. A Psychiatrist is a medically qualified doctor who has chosen to specialise in psychiatry. This means that they are trained to deal with the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of mental and emotional disorders and can prescribe medication as well as recommend other forms of treatment. Most psychiatric diagnoses are made on the basis of a full history and mental state examination.

What do psychiatrists do?

Psychiatrists diagnose and treat patients with mental health problems such as:

Anxiety, phobias, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)

Personality disorders

Schizophrenia and paranoia

Depression and bipolar disorder (manic depression)

Eating disorders, such as anorexia

Sleep disorders, such as insomnia

Medication may be provided to help reduce the severity of an individual's symptoms.
  • Services for Older Adults

Psicon provides services specifically for older adults.
Older people may be more vulnerable to specific triggers of mental ill health. These might include:

    Difficulties in adjusting to retirement

Being widowed or losing close relationships

Becoming ill or physically less able

    Isolation

These events can cause depression or anxiety, which can be treated effectively with a psychological intervention.
  • Degenerative Conditions

Older people are at higher risk of developing a degenerative condition such as Alzheimer's or Parkinson's Disease. These illnesses can be very traumatic for the individual as well as for the family around them. Psicon can provide full support to individuals and families to help manage the difficulties associated with suffering from a degenerative condition.

    Our services include:

Memory clinic to assess and diagnose degenerative conditions

    Psychological support to individuals
